A Memorable Yet Haunting Experience in Mt. Tarak - Part 3

The atmosphere inside that wide clearing was literally and figuratively dark. It felt heavy. Think of A Nightmare On Elm Street environment. We turned right and heard the really loud sound of the ‘kuligligs’ (local version of crickets). Contz asked me if the sound was coming from the birds, I pointed out that these were insect sounds. I thought the other four – Angel, Contz, Jovy and Frank were not noticing the trail after all. After that ‘kuliglig-infested’ trail, we turned left again and another wide section of the trail. That was when I got confused. After that wide section, the trail got narrow again. Everytime we turn, I was expecting Aling Cording’s hut but there was none in sight. And so I uttered,

“Babe I think the trail is longer this time?”

That was when the nerves set in. The other four of my companions were also feeling the same way. And after they got an affirmation from me that the trail was really very weird, their worst thought was confirmed: there’s something eerie going on. We were not lost because it was just a straightforward trail. Jovy reacted by saying she doesn’t like what’s happening. After the third wide trail, Contz stopped to get her flashlight from her backpack because it was getting dark already. When I checked the time it was just 5:00PM. Jovy asked me again and I confirmed that it was just 5:00PM. She thought that it was already 6 or 7PM because of the dark surrounding. For me, the terrifying atmosphere definitely made it seem like it was already 12:00AM when ghosts and witches start to appear in the heart of the forest.

We walked. No. We sprinted. Jovy, who was slowing the small group of five during the whole trek, was the one leading now! And boy she was fast! Talk about adrenaline rush and fear combined. We walked again in a narrow section, heard the crickets again, went to a wider section and the rain started to pour! That area where we heard the insects again was very familiar in the sense that all of us knew that we were going around circles, passing by the same trail over and over again. We were actually not walking fast because of the rain! It was because of this weird and eerie feeling that all of us felt! After a couple of turns, we finally saw Aling Cording’s hut. And I know it wasn’t supposed to be the case.

We rested at Aling Cording’s hut but no one spoke about what transpired in that first forest of the mountain. When the heavy rain stopped, we continued our trek from Aling Cording to the Brgy. Hall this time, with a prominent wide road. That’s when we discussed what happened and we all agreed that we are all correct. The trail became weird and the environment eerie. We didn’t get lost but the trail was prolonged. By whom? Certainly not a work of men. Who can modify and prolong a trail overnight? After all, our advance team made it all the way to Aling Cording’s hut from Papaya River in just two hours. We did it in three hours.

I was very sure that we needed to pass by only one wide trail section before reaching Aling Cording. We passed by three wide sections.

After that, the narrow trail should get wider until we reach the road. The trail got narrow several times.

There was a portion with a very small hill at the left side where the kuligligs blew that threatening sound. We passed that trail twice.

I was pretty sure that there were just seven to eight turns after the rocky part where we were drenched by rain the day before. The road turned at least twenty nine times.

So why am I coming back to Mt. Tarak? I am very much fascinated by the spooky event and I want to assure myself that what happened was not just a collaborative imagination of five normal people. And regardless of what happened, Mt. Tarak is still one of my favorite mountains.
