Philippines David Byrne and the Iron Butterfly

Imelda Marcos is probably best known for her collection of shoes and her bittersweet relationship with former Philippine president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Many see Imelda, who recently won a seat in the congress representing the 2nd district of Ilocos Norte, as an icon of power, of beauty and of fashion. But many others see her as a lavish, big spender, materialistic lady in her 80s.
But I admire the lady, from head to toe.
I was surprised when I recently learned that one of America's greatest music icon, David Byrne, is paying tribute to the lady that is Imelda.
"When I was a young girl in Leyte," is the line opener in one of the songs in his album titled "Here Lies Love", a collaboration with Fatboy Slim, which also features a bunch of other great singers.
One of my favorites, Tori Amos, is also in the album singing "You'll Be Taken Care Of." Cyndi Lauper also sings "Eleven Days" in the album. Both of the songs by Amos and Lauper tells the story of the Ferdinand and Imelda courtship.
Martial Law is a turning point in Philippine history as well as in the lives of the Marcoses. The declaration permanently pinned their family name in the world of politics and power.
The declaration of Martial Law obviously will not be left out in the album. Natalia Merchant sings the somber track "Order 1081", remembering the days of the militaristic government of the Philippines at the time.
