PhilippinesTwo Years After Ondoy, We Have Pedring
It was a little over two years ago when the country was swept by typhoon Ondoy . This typhoon is particularly memorable for many Metro Manila residents because it caused record floods that kept a significant part of the metropolis deep under water for days. Some houses, multiple-storey ones, were wholly submerged underwater while their owners were forced to go up to their roof and wait for rescuers. Many people died and much of the city was practically deep in mud for weeks. In what is perhaps an attempt at an encore by Mother Nature, we were then hit by typhoon Pedring . No, Pedring is no Ondoy by any standard available, but it still caused enough damage to get remembered by many for weeks to come. The floods were also horrific, not necessarily because they were too high, but along them came waves beyond imagination that it appeared like tsunami hit the shores of Manila Bay. People from Marikina, where Ondoy had struck the most, evacuated in droves to the nearest evacuation centers as they have not fully moved on yet from the experience they had had two years prior. In the office, I could sense just how strong the winds were as it was whistling probably through some crack in the window. It reminded me of a ghost, and the thought of the window breaking down to allow the wind free to enter scared me. We were ordered to go home early but I had so much to do that I got home a little over my usual arrival. Everybody left a little earlier than usual, though. Perfect for me as there was less noise to distract me from my concentration. Fortunately, while I was on my way home, the rain and the winds weren't as bad. It only got a little terrible once I was in the confines of my own home. By this time, you would think that this was a botched attempt by the typhoon gods to remind us of Ondoy . Again, it was not that bad. The catch? There are at least two more storms waiting just outside of the national area of responsibility, forecasted to enter once Pedring is already out. Now let's see what they have in store for us. You can talk about...
