A Pampanga Adventure

Thank author of this post/comment

I first learned of the province of Pampanga through the local song "Atikupong Singsing" when I was about 5 ot 6. I often hear it being played in the radio and I had to ask my mom what language was used in the song. She said it was Kapampangan, the dialect of Pampanga natives.

For those who have yet to visit Pampanga and has only learned of it from books and words of mouth, the first thing that comes to mind is the lahar, ashes spewn by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1990.

But there is more to Pampanga than what just history books can tell.

For one, Pampanga is known as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines, a titled bestowed to the province and its people because of their passion in giving gastronomic pleasures to everyone. Kapampangans are known to be kitchen buddies, and even the little ones know a thing or two in cooking. Some of the prized delicacies of Pampanga include the famous Bulanglang, Crab Paste in Gata and Sisig.

Pampanga is also a great site for bird watching. The Candaba Swamp is particularly popular to bird watching enthusiasts. Thousands of birds, endemic and migrants to the swamp, can be observed here all year round, but with most of the concentration during the dry months of March to May. Rare migratory birds are especially popular in the area.

Pampanga is also rich in historical values. There stand in the province a marker for the Death March during Word War II, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers were forced to march from Bataan to Tarlac by the invading Japanese troops, wherein more than half of the marchers died and were thrown on the roadside.

Pampanga is just a few hours away from Metro Manila and is easily accessible from the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).
