PhilippinesThe Philippines as a Global Super Power?
I may never see the day when my home country, the Philippines, become a global superpower. Never has it played a globally important role in the history of mankind, nor does it appear to take that kind of role in the future. The 21st century is said to be the Asian Century, the time when the world will look up to Asian countries instead of those in Europe or in the Americas. Yet, countries like China and India are seen to be the carriers of this regional power, not the Philippines.
Filipinos, the way I see it, are much much better at succeeding individually. There are many bright Filipinos who have become famous worldwide for excelling in things that only require individual effort. If wealth is a measure of success, for example, Filipinos residing in the United States are richer than the average American. In fact, Filipinos are the second richest Asians in the United States--second only to the Indians. When it comes to collective achievement, however, we don't seem to have that many. This is ironic considering that we have this national virtue of bayanihan, or helping each other to achieve a common goal. But I once heard of this interesting theory, a theory of the capacity of the Filipino people to take over the world in a different manner. It is no surprise to many of us that Filipinos are perhaps among the prolific producer of laborers to the rest of the world. Roughly 10% of the Filipino population are scattered overseas to work as nurses, doctors, engineers, IT professionals, and so much more. But the Philippines is most famous for producing domestic helpers and that is where the opportunity lies to become superpowers. Filipino maids go all over the world to take care of the homes of many people, including their children. With so many children to take care of, it is natural to assume that many of them will turn into the most influential people of their age. Imagine that, Filipinos taking care of future superpowers while they are in their most vulnerable age when their minds may be easily molded by their Filipino caretakers. In a sense, that is the kind of power that Filipinos can wield. Passive, maybe, but definitely more effective than the kind of personalities yield today. This is the kind of power that is not resisted, because it is influential yet loving and caring. You can talk about... The Philippines as a Global Super Power?
