This year is particularly special for Tomasinos, and perhaps, for the whole Philippines. This year sees the 400th year of the first university in Asia, giving pride to the scholarly achievements of every Filipino.

As part of the quadricentennial celebration of the University of Santo Tomas, world renowned sculptor Ramon Orlina, a Tomasino himself, was commissioned to work on a masterpiece that will become the embodiment of UST's 400 years of existence.

The masterpiece in question is the QuattroMondial, a bronze and glass creation unveiled last January 27. It features a tilted globe at 23.5 degrees facing the North Star. Below the globe are four human figures taken after real people.

Orlina was given the freedom to choose his own models, and was governed by a single guideline - they have to be a Tomasino. He came up with beauty queen Charlene Gonzales representing Thomasian teachers, his daughter Monina Orlina representing Filipina students, Fr. Rolando V. dela Rosa, O.P representing Dominican friars and actor Piolo Pascual representing the male Filipino students.

Of the four, Piolo Pascual summons the most controversy. WHy did Orlina chose Pascual when he's not even a UST alumna? The artist was quick to note however that Pascual studied in UST, and that is enough reason for him to be in his masterpiece.

Also part of the QuattroMondial is a ribbon with Latin inscriptions, which translates to accomplishments, scholarliness and wisdom.
