Thank author of this post/comment

My Muslim fiancé and I have tried to process our marriage license in the Embassy outside the Philippines but we had some difficulties compiling all the required documents. (Namely: Three (3) photocopies of the contracting party's birth certificate, duly certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO) and authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila / Original NSO Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) of each contracting party, duly authenticated by the DFA / Passport copies of the contracting parties / Passport copies of the witnesses / Two (2) recent passport-size pictures of the contracting parties / (If applicable) Parental consent of the parents for applicants aged 18-21, duly authenticated by the DFA / (If applicable) Parental advice of the parents for applicants aged 22-25, duly authenticated by the DFA. The contracting parties must appear personally at the Embassy or Consulate General when they submit the above documents and apply for a marriage license. The license will then be posted for fifteen (15) consecutive working days prior to the schedule of their wedding. The total amount of fees will be an equivalent of approximately P.5,000.00/-)

We’ve heard from some friends that it’s a lot easier to have a Muslim wedding in the Philippines so we gave it a try. We were welcomed inside the gated compound of the mosque by some Muslim men in their typical attire, a hat on their head called Kufi, their clothes called dishdasha or kandura, and pyjama. We went to what seems to be a receiving area on the right hand side of the mosque. We found some people playing chess in one corner, they accompanied us to another room where the Imam (the worship leader of a Mosque) was sitting.

The Imam asked us to fill and sign the Marriage Certificate Form and inspected our original passports. He told us that we need to pay P.18,000.00/- for the whole process including the authentication of the marriage certificate after the approval of the Sharia Court in Mindanao. He told us that it will take a month for the certificate to be ready. After the payment, we asked the Imam where and when can we get married, his answer was “right now, if you want”. We were all surprised on how fast things went but decided to proceed since we’re already there.

I was told to follow the Imam as he pronounce the Shahada (declaration of faith) the first of Islam’s five pillars as I needed to be converted to Islam before I can get married. Then they’ve asked me to choose my Muslim name, I chose one that is close to my original name. Then they’ve asked my father if he allows us to get married and accepts the P. 10,000.00/ Moakhar Sadak (the amount to be paid to the woman in case of divorce or in case of the death of her husband) which later that day my father told me he thought will be given to him in cash then laughed. Next, the Imam asked the groom if he accepts the bride, the question and answer was repeated three times. Then I expected the same will be done with me but oddly I was asked only once if I accept the groom. That was it; they told us that they will send the final marriage certificate by courier.

I’m sure the streets of Quiapo have a lot more to offer from bargains, fortune tellers, herbal products and fashion items. Can’t wait for my next visit to the home of endless possibilities.
